{"id":864,"date":"2016-10-31T16:24:28","date_gmt":"2016-10-31T16:24:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/myquickbookkeeping.com\/?p=864"},"modified":"2017-05-30T18:10:15","modified_gmt":"2017-05-30T18:10:15","slug":"a-day-in-the-life-of-an-afid-hoop-volunteer-in-arequipa-peru","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/myquickbookkeeping.com\/tailwind\/?p=864","title":{"rendered":"A day in the life of an AfID HOOP volunteer in Arequipa, Peru"},"content":{"rendered":"<style type=\"text\/css\"><\/style><p>My volunteering assignment ends today. \u00a0I was welcomed by an incredible team of people who are working very hard to have a positive impact on the families in the community in which they work.\u00a0 A big thank you to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afid.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AfID<\/a> for making this possible, and of course to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hoopperu.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HOOP<\/a>, for such a rewarding experience.<\/p>\n<p>For my last post I thought I would share \u201c a day in the life\u201d pictorial so you can see Arequipa through the eyes of a volunteer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_203\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-203\" style=\"width: 3216px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-203\" src=\"https:\/\/kerrysmithies.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/10\/pa300926.jpg\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" width=\"3216\" height=\"2144\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-203\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The street where I lived. \u00a0My first view as I stepped out the front gate each morning. \u00a0I love the red geraniums lining the houses.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-195\" src=\"https:\/\/kerrysmithies.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/10\/2016-10-20-08-10-25.jpg\" alt=\"2016-10-20-08-10-25\" width=\"3264\" height=\"2448\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">An early morning visit to Plaza de Yanuara for some green and coffee.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-196\" src=\"https:\/\/kerrysmithies.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/10\/2016-10-20-10-31-22.jpg\" alt=\"2016-10-20-10-31-22\" width=\"3264\" height=\"2448\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">My daily Spanish lesson was in this beautiful garden. \u00a0Many houses are hiding gardens and courtyards behind the high walls alongside the sidewalks.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The office from outside and in! \u00a0Working with Cindy. \u00a0I had such a great time working with you \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">For the first two weeks I joined some other volunteers for &#8220;menu&#8221; lunch which is a two course set menu \u00a0for 7 or 8 soles, the equivalent of about $2 to $3. \u00a0After that I went to the supermarket and made my own salads for lunch. \u00a0Enjoying them on the rooftop patio with colleagues was a nice break in the day.<\/p>\n\n<p>After work I could change cash on the corner (rate for USD ranges from 3.35 to 3.365), grab a delicious empanada, and\/or pick up the laundry.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the evening there was a myriad of options. \u00a0If I didn&#8217;t feel like relaxing in Soul Guest House with other guests and volunteers I could go to Plaza de Armas with a new friend; eat delicious food, my favourite restaurant was ZigZag, right across from San Francisco Cathedral; laugh with friends (so much we were asked to be quiet!); or assist in the planning and hosting of a fundraising Quiz Night! \u00a0The city feels walkable and safe in the evenings too.<\/p>\n<p>After a month here in Arequipa I can now cross the road without fear; read a menu and successfully order food; negotiate with a taxi driver, and end up where I intended; and communicate un pocotito with local people. \u00a0I have also made some very nice friends.<\/p>\n<p>If you have ever visited a place and wondered &#8220;What would it be like to live here?&#8221; I would highly recommend volunteering. \u00a0You are able to easily integrate into a community and experience a place with local support. \u00a0I have had so much fun living in and exploring Arequipa with people who have introduced me to so many great experiences and activities I would not have had as a visitor.<\/p>\n<p>This is my last post about volunteering my next posts will be travel related as I continue my journey in Peru. \u00a0I will not post to those to Linkedin. \u00a0If you are interested please follow my blog!
