{"id":830,"date":"2016-10-20T00:18:10","date_gmt":"2016-10-20T00:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/myquickbookkeeping.com\/?p=830"},"modified":"2017-05-30T18:10:15","modified_gmt":"2017-05-30T18:10:15","slug":"a-visit-to-the-flora-tristan-community-with-hoop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/myquickbookkeeping.com\/tailwind\/?p=830","title":{"rendered":"A visit to the Flora Tristan community with HOOP"},"content":{"rendered":"<style type=\"text\/css\"><\/style><div id=\"cmsms_row_6ac41f2cd540f\" class=\"cmsms_row cmsms_color_scheme_default\">\n<div class=\"cmsms_row_outer_parent\">\n<div class=\"cmsms_row_outer\">\n<div class=\"cmsms_row_inner\">\n<div class=\"cmsms_row_margin\">\n<div class=\"cmsms_column one_first\">\n<div class=\"cmsms_text\">\n<p>When <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afid.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AfID<\/a> (Accounting for International Development) offered me volunteering placement opportunities I did not hesitate in selecting HOOP after reading about the great work they were doing to break the cycle of poverty in Arequipa by educating children and their families and providing access to health care and social workers.<\/p>\n<p>I was delighted to be able to spend an afternoon touring the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hoopperu.org\/where-we-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flora Tristan community<\/a> with Jennifer, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hoopperu.org\/our-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">volunteer coordinator<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hoopperu.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HOOP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The population of Arequipa grew by 38% to 852,800 in the 20 years to 2013, and continues to grow.\u00a0 A large portion of this increase is due to families relocating from rural areas to find work in the city. \u00a0Makeshift communities have sprung up on the outskirts of the city with little access to public amenities such as schooling, clean water and sewage.<\/p>\n<p>Flora Tristan is one of these communities. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hoopperu.org\/\">HOOP<\/a> have been working in the Flora Tristan community since 2012, and have made remarkable <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hoopperu.org\/programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">progress<\/a> with relatively few resources.<\/p>\n<p>The highlight of the tour was a visit to the school being run by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hoopperu.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HOOP<\/a>.\u00a0 Each afternoon children aged 4 to 15 are provided with free English classes.\u00a0 The classes are taught by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hoopperu.org\/volunteer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">volunteers<\/a> from all over the world.
